Independent security advice for executives, boards, and investors facing capable adversaries.

Services

Engagements are scoped projects or ongoing advisory.

Independent advice during ransomware and extortion events

When an attack is underway, I give executives, boards, and investors an independent read from outside the incident response and negotiation firms: a second opinion on how the event is being handled, alternate analysis of the threat actor, and modeling of response scenarios.

Strategic threat analysis

Assessment of political, physical, and cyber threats to a company, its platform, its supply chain, and its people, including state-backed threats to staff in high-risk countries and executive travel with elevated risk of device compromise. I did this work for Twitter’s security leadership.

Corporate AI adoption and security

Guidance on putting AI to work across the enterprise: which uses are worth the risk, how to secure models, data, and agents, and what governance looks like in practice. Drawn from leading AI adoption and governance across every function of a security software company.

High-assurance security architecture

Feasibility, cost, and design for environments that must hold against the most capable state-backed threats, including frontier AI labs protecting model weights. I served on the executive committee of the Security Level 5 Task Force, which wrote a security standard for frontier AI.

Federal and defense cyber strategy

Advice for commercial companies selling into government: teaming agreements with prime contractors, pricing and contract structure, and how to present capability to government buyers. Grounded in seven years at US Cyber Command, where I built its partnerships with industry.

Board and executive advisory

Executive and board briefings on the threat actors most likely to target your organization, recent incidents in your sector, and policy changes that affect you. Drawn from current policy work at the Institute for Security and Technology and teaching at Johns Hopkins SAIS.

He spent seven years at US Cyber Command’s Cyber National Mission Force, joining as its 14th member. He created the initial concepts for DoD’s first hunt and incident response teams, directed the force’s first two years of incident response against state-backed intrusions, founded its private sector collaboration program, built Hunt Forward, ran the public disclosure of adversary tools, and led enable defense for the 2018 and 2020 elections.

He retired from the US Marine Corps as a major after more than 23 years, rising from enlisted IT technician to communications officer, with two deployments to Afghanistan and command of CBRNE response elements at National Special Security Events.
